Can you make your New Year’s resolution successful?

A New Year’s resolution is a promise people make to start doing something good or stop doing something bad from the first day of the year. Typical resolutions include giving up smoking and keeping fit. However, the promise is often broken quite quickly and people are back into their bad habits within weeks or days.

A study by Richard Wiseman from the University ofBristol, UK, involving 3,000 people showed that 88 percent of those who set New Year resolutions fail, the fact is that 52 percent of the study’s participants(参与者)were confident of success at the beginning.

Some people agree that making New Year resolutions have become a formality. It doesn’t matter whether they are followed or not. It is just like eating turkey on Thanksgiving Day. Life goes on as usual after a resolution is made.

Timothy Pychyl, a professor at Carleton University in Canada, arguing that resolutions are a form of “cultural procrastination(拖延症),” an effort to reinvent oneself. People make resolutions as a way of encouraging themselves. However, people are not ready to change their habits, especially bad habits, and that hadthe high failure rate(比率).

Psychologist(心理学家)Chris Hart says most people set the goalsthey can’t reach.“…like expecting to get married this yearor winningthe lottery(彩票). Those aren’t resolutions. They’re wishes,” says Dr. Hart. “So only set goals that are totally within your control —practical, realistic and positive,” he says.

Ms. Christina Lenjou, anotherpsychologist thinks that most people are too ambitious(有强烈欲望的)by setting too many resolutions. “I advise people to choose one and focus on it,” she says. “This means that if you want to stop smoking this year, thenyou must say by which month.” “You need to understand that this is a long journey and stop looking at just the results. You need to know that you must start with reducing the number of cigarette(香烟)sticks every week.” she says.

Dr. Hart says it takes about three weeks to change a habit. If you regard it as the New Year’sresolution,it is usually very difficult. Often people fail simply because we

aren’t willing to carryit on. He also advises people to focus on changing their behavior, rather than the endresult. So if you are dieting, do not weigh yourself every day. Instead, focus on what you eat and how much exercise you are getting.

53. What does the word “formality” in Paragraph 3probably mean? A.Partyof celebration. B.Goalof life.

C.Requirement of custom. D.Productionof culture. 54. The writer mentionsMs. Christinato. A.stress the process of change B.offermoreresolutionsto choose C.introduce a way to stop smoking D.prove the importance of resolution 55. What can we learn from the passage?

A.It is difficultfor people tomaketheirresolutions.

B.People can’t carrythe resolutionsonso theyare easy to fail.

C.Winningthe lotteryeasily next year is a great New Year resolution.

D.Paying attention to everythingis the secret of achieving yourresolution. 七、阅读短文,根据短文内容,从短文后的五个选项中选出能填入空白处的最 佳选项。每个选项只能用一次。(共10分,每小题2分)

Sarah and Paige are best friends. Like many teenage girls, they talk about school, sports, and family, and they are together online and on the phone every day.

56 . Paige lives in New Zealand, and Sarah lives in the U.S, 8,000 miles away. They talk on the phone and send emails, but they can see each other on video chat.

57 . Sarah was born with only one arm, and her mother wanted to meet parents of similar children. She found Paige’s mother on the Internet and learned that Paige also had only one arm. The girls’parents shared letters and photos.

Later, Paige and Sarah became friends over email. “I needed someone that could understand everything about me,”says Sarah. They talk abouttypical teenage things.

58 . They show each other how to do things that are different with one arm, such as painting their fingernails. “Sarah taught me a lot,”says Paige, “and gave me a lot of confidence. Ican tell Sarah things that I wouldn’t tell my other friends.59 .”

Finally, after they were best friends for eight years, Sarah flew to New Zealand to meet Paige for the first time. When she finally saw Paige, she ran to her best friend.

60 . “Paige will always be my best friend.”says Sarah.

八、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共10分,每小题2分)

How many times have your parents told you that you must eat your green vegetables? We all know that green vegetables are healthy, but what about other foods of different colors? You don’t need to like all food, but it is good to have different colorsin your diet(饮食), for example, red food such as strawberries and tomatoes, yellow food such as bananas and pears and orange food such as carrots and oranges. But what about blue food?

A few years ago, a food company added the color blue to its bagsof sweets. Children like the color blue, so were the blue sweets popular? The food company was surprised to find that they were very unpopular. Children still preferred the sweets that were the usual colors of red, green, brown, yellow and orange.

How many blue meats or vegetables do you know? None? There are few natural blue foods —it isn’t a common natural food color. Some scientists say that as a result, our brain doesn’t recognize blue food as something healthy or safe to eat. This is perhaps why we don’t usually use blue food coloring for drinks, cakes and other food.

Some people say we eat with our eyes. The idea isthat we need to like the looks of thefood before we try it. I wanted to test this idea and so I asked some friends to have a very unusual lunch. My husband and I made some eggs on toast and put blue coloring in them. The resultis nobody ate them.My guests refused to put the blue eggs in their mouths!

So will we ever see blue food on our plates? The answer seems to be “no”, at least in countries like the UK and the USA.

61. Do youneed to like all food?

62. What color of sweets did the children prefer?

63. Whywouldn’tpeople usually use blue food coloring for drinks, cakes and other food? 64. How did the writer test the idea that we eat with our eyes? 65. What is the passage mainly about?
