Passage 1

On average, American kids aged 3 to 12 spend 29 hours a week in school, eight hours more than they did in 1981. They also did more household work and participated in more of such organized activities as soccer and ballet. Involvement in sports, in particular, rose almost 50% from 1981 to 1997: boys now spend an average of four hours a week playing sports; girls log half that time. All in all, however, children’s leisure time dropped from 40% of the day in 1981 to 25%.

“Children are affected by the same crunch(危机)that affects their parents,” says Sandra Hofferth, who headed the recent study of children’s timetable. A chief reason, she says, is that more mothers are working outside the home.(Nevertheless, children in both double-income and “male breadwinner” households spent comparable amounts of time interacting with parents, 19 hours and 22 hours respectively. In contrast, children spent only 9 hours with their single mothers.)

All work no play could make for some very messed-up kids. “Play is the most powerful way a child explores the world and learns about himself,” says T. Berry Brazelton, professor at Harvard Medical School. Unstructured play encourages independent thinking and allows the young to negotiate their relationships with peers, but kids aged 3 to 12 spent only 12 hours a week engaged in it.

The children sampled spent a quarter of their rapidly decreasing “free time” watching television. But that, believe it or not, was one of the findings parents might regard as good news. If they’re spending less time in front of the TV set, however, kids aren’t replacing it with reading. Despite efforts to get kids more interested in books, the children spend just over an hour a week reading. Let’s face it, who’s got the time? 6. According to the passage, the reason given by Sandra Hofferth for the time crunch is ______.

A.partially true B.quite convincing C.rather confusing D.totally groundless 【批阅】回答错误!

7. According to the author, a child develops better if ______.

A.he has plenty of time reading and playing B.he is free to interact with working parents C.he is left to play with his peers in his own way D.he has more time participating in school activities 【批阅】回答正确! 【答案】C

8. The author is concerned about the fact that American kids ______.

A.are involved less and less in household work B.are spending more and more time watching TV C.are engaged in more and more structured activities D.are increasingly neglected by their working mothers 【批阅】回答错误!

9. We can not infer from the passage that ______.

A.most parents believe reading to be beneficial to children B.efforts to get kids interested in reading have been fruitful C.most children will not turn to reading with TV sets switched off D.extracurricular activities promote children’s intelligence 【批阅】回答正确! 【答案】D

10. By mentioning “the same time crunch”(Line 1, Para. 2),Sandra Hofferth means ______.

A.children have little time to play with their parents B.both parents and children suffer from lack of leisure time C.both parents and children have trouble managing their time D.children are not taken good care of by their working parents 【批阅】回答正确! 【答案】B

Passage 2

Looking to improve your language skills, but you don’t have the time to go overseas to attend school? More and more universities around the world are offering opportunities for students to obtain degrees online (distance education) from the comfort of their own homes, and many of these institutions are accredited, meaning that they have met certain standards of excellence.

If you decide to take language courses online (or any subject for that matter), be sure to evaluate the benefits of studying online versus going abroad. The advantages of studying online are that the costs are usually lower, you can study at your own pace, and you have access to the materials 24-hours-a-day from almost any computer in the world. However, you won’t get the human interaction of meeting people face to face as you would if you were physically attending a school overseas.

On the other hand, the advantages of going overseas may include day-to-day opportunities to learn a new culture, meet new friends with whom you can use and practice the language, and chances to see different parts of the world. However, there may be a number of disadvantages for some including expense, time away from one’s school, family, or work life, and the challenge of adapting to a new culture and way of life.

Whatever you do, consider a distance education program that meets your educational needs, is within your budget, and equally important, provides you with opportunities to grow beyond the classroom through cultural and educational activities. 11. What is the author’s tone for writing this passage?

Passage 1

Can animals be made to work for us? Some scientists think that one day animals may be trained to do a number of simple jobs that are now done by human beings.

They point out that at a circus, for example, we may see elephants, monkeys, dogs and other animals doing quite skillful things. Perhaps you have seen them on the television or in a film. If you watch closely, you may notice that the trainer always gives the animal a piece of candy or a piece of fruit as a reward. The scientists say that many different animals may be trained to do a number of simple jobs if they know they will get a reward for doing them.

Of course, as we know, dogs can be used to guard a house, and soldiers in both old and modern times have used geese to give warning by making a lot of noise when a stranger or an enemy comes near. But it may be possible to train animals to work in factories. In Russian, for example, pigeons(鸽子), which are birds with good eyesight, are being used to watch out for faults in small steel balls that are being made in one factory.

When the pigeon sees a ball which looks different from others, it touches a steel plate with its beak. This turns on a light to warn people in the factory. At the same time a few seeds are given as a reward. It takes three to five weeks to train a pigeon to this and one pigeon can inspect 3,000 to 4,000 balls an hour.

Apes(猩猩)have been used in America in helping to make cars, and scientists believe that these large monkeys may be one day gather crops and even drive trains. 6. What made scientists think animals can be made to work for us one day?

Passage 2

When companies need new employees, they usually place advertisements in newspapers in order to attract as many applicants as possible. But many large well-known companies hire new people frequently without putting advertisements in newspapers, because they already have many resumes(简历)on file. Therefore,it is not always best to apply only to companies that place ads in newspapers.

A person looking for a job is advised to send his resume with a cover letter(附函)to a well-known company even if a position is not then open. He can follow up with a telephone call to inquire if his resume has been received and if any jobs are available. If the company has not a job at that time, he can ask that they keep his material on file and contact him in the future when something is available.

Sometimes if a company is not hiring at the time,a letter explaining that a position is not currently available will be sent. If a person sends a letter and resume to a company that is not then hiring and later sees an advertisement in the newspaper for a job with that company,he should call the company to make certain they have his material on file and will consider him for the position. So, a person has nothing to lose and everything to gain by sending in his resume.

Passage 1

A story is told about a soldier who was finally coming home after having fought in Vietnam. He called his parents from San Francisco. “Mom and Dad, I’m coming home, but I’ve a favor to ask. I have a friend. I’d like to bring him home with me”. “Sure,” they replied, “we’d love to meet him.” “There’s something you should know,” the son continued, “he was injured pretty badly in the fighting. He stepped on a land mine(地雷)and lost an arm and a leg. He has nowhere else to go, and I want him to live with us.” “We’ re sorry to hear that, son. “Son,” said the father, “You don’t know what you’re asking. Someone with such a handicap would be a terrible burden to us. We have our own lives to live, and we can’t let something like this interfere with our lives. I think you should just come home and forget about this guy. He’ll find a way to live on his own.”

At this point, the son hung up the phone. The parents heard nothing more from him. A few days later, however, they received a call from the San Francisco police. Their son had died after falling from a building. The police believed he had killed himself.
