The number of people in the US without a home is down from one year ago. The total is nearly 550,000, about 3% lower than last year. The number comes from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The information comes after a report from the United Nations that homelessness is ¡°spreading¡± worldwide. The report asked governments around the world to terminate homelessness by 2030 so that no one would have to live on the streets.
The UN last did a study on the world's homeless population 11 years ago. At that time, it estimated (¹À¼Æ) the total at 100 million. But the UN said the number is likely much higher today. It estimates that 100 million children alone are now without a home.

Recently, in the city of Mosul, Iraq, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development measured (ͳ¼Æ) homelessness on a single night. In January, thousands of volunteers spread out across the country. They counted a total of 549,922 homeless people. That is down 14% from six years ago. Still, the government reported increased homelessness in the cities of Los Angeles, Dallas, Seattle and Washington, D£®C. Officials thought higher housing prices are responsible for the increase.
Leilani Farha, the top UN official on housing, said homelessness is an issue of life-and-death importance. ¡°The death rate (ËÀÍöÂÊ) among homeless people is two to ten times higher than that among the people who are not homeless£¬¡± she said.
In the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, 250,000 people do not have a place to stay. Many of them are children, and live on the streets. In India, the homeless population is estimated at 78 million. Eleven million of that number are street children. Indonesia's homeless population is 3 million, including 28,000 in the capital, Jakarta. In Nigeria, the homeless population is estimated at 24 million.

A friend of mine watched me visit a website where people practice small acts of kindness. He asked, ¡°What is that place you __1__ visit£¿¡± Then I made a quick __2__ for him. Then he said, ¡°So, all of you people are boasting (´µÐê) about good deeds (ÐÐΪ)£¿¡±
I remained in __3__. Then, a few minutes later I said, ¡°No. We share positive thoughts and __4__ people to change for good. It's an inspiration __5__ you can learn from those good deeds and start to change the world by __6__ kindness.¡±
Then he replied, ¡°But that doesn't __7__ too much. There are many bad things on this planet and you guys are few against an army of negativity. __8__£¬ you don't change anything by __9__ posting beautiful images and words. If you want to change the world, donate (¾èÔù) something.¡±
Then he was __10__. I replied, ¡°Which __11__ do you choose? You can be part of that negativity army or you can __12__ us. It's all about __13__. By posting images and words, you're changing your inner spirit and telling yourself every day that your world is __14__. It's your daily food for spirit. For your information, I've donated many times but I don't __16__ anyone because it's a little secret of happiness. __17__ you said nobody gave you a gift on Christmas Eve, but found one on your desk the next day? I told him, ¡°Don't be. You can change your world if you want. No matter what. No matter the opposite army. Just __20__ and spread.¡±
