Saipan is the largest island of the Northern Mariana Islands. It¡¯s in the western Pacific Ocean and belongs to the United States. Now the Mayor (Êг¤) of Saipan is Marian Tudela. He began to work as the mayor on June 2, 2014.

3

There are two main roads on the island. They are Beach Road and Middle Road. Beach Road is on the western coast of Saipan. Flame trees (»ðÑæÊ÷) are in the street. The road also connects more than six villages. Middle Road is the island¡¯s largest road and runs through its center.

Thousands of people visit there every year because of its natural scenery and wonderful history. You can go there at any time. But I think the best months to visit there are May and June. During these two months, the flame trees look like fire. They are very beautiful. In July and August, there are fewer visitors. People can travel to the island by plane. After getting there, you can take a taxi, or rent a car. Certainly, you can also take the free bus from the shopping center to the main hotels. ( )61. The scientists at Bath University began a program to build a three-wheeled mini-vehicle (ÈýÂÖСÐͳµ) in 2004. This kind of car is only a meter wide. It runs on natural gas and has a top speed (ËÙ¶È) of 50 mph.

The design was helped by the EU. It gave ¡ê1.5 million to the program. The scientists from different countries like Germany, France and Australia were working on it together. With their hard work, the first car was finished in 2005. The vehicle cost around ¡ê6,500. It was expensive but excellent.

¡°Natural gas will become more widely used,¡± said Ben Drew, one of the scientists working at Bath University. ¡°Though the mini-vehicle is a little longer, it¡¯s half-a-meter smaller than a normal car, so you should be able to move in and out of the traffic easily.¡±

The mini-vehicle¡¯s fuel consumption (ȼÁÏÏûºÄ) is around 188 miles per gallon (¼ÓÂØ), a fifth of most cars, so it won¡¯t pollute the air as normal cars do. The vehicle can carry two people, with the passenger sitting just behind the driver.
